What began as a creative and playful exploration of short fiction is now reaching readers well beyond Australia. Read My Shorts: A Collection of Short Fiction is gaining traction in both the United States and Sri Lanka and providing an exciting and deeply rewarding milestone in my writing journey.
The US Market
In the American market, the momentum has been driven by a wave of enthusiastic Amazon reviews. Readers consistently highlight the collection’s emotional range, accessibility, and variety. While the stories are brief, their impact is anything but. As one reviewer notes, the book is:
“a wonderful mix that can make you laugh, cry, and reflect—sometimes within the space of just a few pages.”
Across multiple five-star reviews, a clear pattern emerges: readers appreciate the way the stories move fluidly between humour and poignancy while remaining concise and complete. Several have commented on how particular pieces linger long after reading, while others praise the balance between entertainment and reflection. The inclusion of author notes has also resonated strongly, offering insights into the creative spark behind each story and adding an extra layer of connection.
Growing Sri Lankan Interest
The growing readership has, in turn, sparked renewed interest in my earlier novel, Darwin’s Wake. Readers are rediscovering it for its exploration of history, identity, and perspective, particularly its engagement with Sri Lankan settings and voices. As many readers will know, the novel is partly set in Sri Lanka and centres on a Sri Lankan Tamil protagonist, Kamahli. Rather than attempting to explain the beautiful and culturally diverse country, I aimed to create an encounter with it, an approach that resonates with Sri Lankan and other readers.

That connection has been further strengthened by a recent feature in Sri Lanka’s Daily News, which has broadened my reach and positioned my work within a wider international context. Importantly, the article recognises Sri Lanka not simply as a setting in my writing, but as an influence that has helped shape it. As journalist Sachitra Mahendra writes:
“It would be easy to classify Pete Mitchell as an ‘international writer’ and move on. But that would miss the point. His work does not merely include Sri Lanka—it is shaped by it in part.”
The feature also places Read My Shorts within a broader literary tradition, noting its engagement with both classical and contemporary short fiction. It highlights the discipline of the form, where every word must earn its place, an observation that aligns closely with my own intentions as a writer.
Together, these developments signal something more than positive reviews or media coverage. They reflect a growing connection with readers across borders: American readers discovering the power of concise, emotionally resonant storytelling, and Sri Lankan readers recognising the cultural sensitivity and perspective embedded in my work.
It’s a gratifying moment—one that suggests these stories, though small in scale, are travelling far and finding their audience.
